What causes uterine fibroids?

I am 46 years old and I have recently been diagnosed with a uterine fibroid.

I was just told I have a fibroid the size an orange. The Doctor has given me some options. First- I would be given hormones for 6 months to shrink the size of the fibroid and then have the fibroid removed. The down side is that the hormones will put me in a medically induced menapause. With all of the symtoms of menapause, including decrease in bone density. And the fibroid could grow right back!!! Next the doctor suggested Ablation. This is where the destroy the lining of my uterus with heat. This would render me infertile and does have some risks. The last resort is hysterectomy but the only one that would be 100% effective. But I would like to keep my uterus.

I am 35 years old and am not planning on having anymore children. Please if anyone has any stories or suggestions let me know I’m not sure which treatment I should pick.
I haven’t mentioned that I have had symptoms. I have VERY heavy periods that last about 7-10 days. I am now anemic because of this. Next because of the size of the fibroid it is pressing against my intestines and causing other problems.

I have recently been told I have a fibroid in my womb after being in agonising pain for the last year since coming off the Ortho Evra patch. The symptoms I have match those of a fibroid, eg heavy bleeding, severe abdominal and leg pain, and a laparoscopy found a fibroid which is 3cm x 3cm x 3cm
The docs said it is unlikely this would cause so much pain, but there is literally nothing else it could be caused by, so have been advised to continue treatment for fibroids. I am currently living on tramadol and other painkillers and anti inflammatories but cant continue like this as it will eventually cause other problems elsewhere in my body.
On the first day of my period the pain is so severe i cannot move and i often vomit, so not very nice
I was told by my surgeon to try the pill, i didnt like the combined pill as i have migraines, and i believe oestrogen encourages the growth of fibroids. So I returned to uni and asked my doctor here about going on the mini pill as advised by my surgeon. However the doctor here said that would do nothing to stop the pain. I was given Loestrin, a combined pill, but when reading the info leaflet it says do not take if you have fibroids of the womb???I am sick of recieving conflicting advice from 101 different doctors, and i am so desperate to get my life back, I am only 22 and in my final year of uni.
If anyone knows anything that may reduce the pain, including alternative medicines, please let me know, I am willing to try anything!

I dont want surgical treatment as because of the positioning of the fibroid there would be too much scar tissue in my womb and therefore wouldnt be able to carry children.

Also, does anyone have fibroids and become pregnant?Did this effect the pain at all? Or anyone tried a TENS machine for the pain??

I am literally desperate, so please any info you have would be much appreciated.

Can uterine fibroids cause weight gain?

I have a follow up appt with my doctor on Friday to determine if he found uterine fibroids. I just wanted to know if weight gain is a side effect. I’ve noticed in the past year I have had some weight gain but I have not changed any part of my lifestyle including my diet. If anything I eat a little less and healthier. Does anyone know about this?

Anyone ever had a fibroid embolization?

How painful was it since you only get a local anesthetic?

I have 3 small fibroids in my uterus and I was told that they would not affect getting pregnant by my doctor. I recently had a miscarriage and then D&C and was wondering if the fibroids had anything to do with this?

I will be having myomectomy surgery sometime in August. Fibroids are 8cm and 2cm. I am worried about the scar and the recovery period. thanks

I was told that i have 2 subserosal fiborids and they hurt i want them removed but i want to know really can i still have children after the trement?

What to expect with uterine fibroids?

I was just diagnosed w/ uterine fibroids. Dr. suggested coming in for a consult regarding our options. What are my options? I am 28 and have irregular cell growth before (age15) Could these become cancerous? Will they continue to grow? What can I do about them? Thanks for your help in advance.

I am 31 years old and had a 1 cm fibroid in my uterine cavity. I just had it removed (myomectomy) on Thursday. I am planning on getting pregnant in the next year. My doctor at UCSD prescribed me estrogen for 3 weeks to prevent scar tissue from forming. I was just wondering if anyone else was prescribed this as I hadn’t heard of it anywhere else. If so, what was your experience? Thanks!
