A lot of people around here ask what age their daughters should see a gyno. A lot of ppl respond 18 if there is no sexual activity.
I say they need to see a gyno at the start of puberty – the start of the menstrual cycle. I say they need paps at that point too.
It seems a lot of ppl, even adults, have a lot of misconceptions about why women need to see a gyno. It isnt all just about birth control and stds. They screen for CANCER.
Yes, HPV causes cervical cancer. Yes, it is an std. BUT, it is NOT the only cause. Nor is cervical cancer the only type screened for. While 18 my be the magical number for certian legal privlidges, it is not the magical age for the ability to have cancer.
They also screen for other reproductive issues like fibroids, endritrosis, ect ect.
I know it is rare for young teens to have these issues, but it is possible.
CONT>> RUNNING OUT OF ROOM
If you dont want your child seeing a gyno or having a pap, that is your decision.
BUT PLEASE MAKE IT AN EDUCATED DECISION.
A pap is not a traumatic thing, even for younger people.
I didnt experience cancer, but I did develope fibroid tumors at 15. I wasnt treated until I was 19 at the gyno paying myself because my mom was under the same misconception that you cant have reproductive issues until you are either sexually active or a legal adult.
What are you people so afraid of? Do you really think sexual health education and screenings for cancer or other issues is going to tell your children it is ok to have sex? Do you think these things will make them promiscuis?
Their sexual activity will be determined by what and how you show them, not what happens in a doctors office.
Again, its your decision as a parent, but dont make that decision based on ignorance that you cant have problems until you are an adult
They wont do it without parental consent. And the reason they dont like to do it is because there is so much miseducation with the public. Parents think it is either traumatic assult, or consent to have sex. Atleast that is what I have seen in the replies to other questions dealing with this.
I know several women and teens who began having paps as early as 11 or 12 without problems.
