If it is not malignant, she does not necessarily need surgery. My mother had a benign fibroid uterine tumor and they wanted to give her a hysterectomy. Her tumor was the size of a grapefruit. They told her that they were going to shrink it a bit before the surgery. My mom was furious! She was like, "If you can shrink it a little, why not shrink it away?" Apparently, it's easier for the doctors to just rip out the uterus rather than shrink the tumor away. Jerks. So, my mom went to an internist who put her on progesterone cream. A year and a half later, her tumor was the size of a walnut. A year after that, it was the size of a grape. Now, it is the size of a pea.... AND she's still got all the woman bits she was born with. She may not need them anymore (she's done having kids and stuff), but that doesn't mean she doesn't use the thing. She also doesn't relish the idea of being on hormone therapy for the rest of her life. Getting your uterus removed (especially if they take the ovaries, too, will seriously mess with your sex drive and emotions.

So, you can't afford the surgery. DON'T have it (unless it's malignant). If you can prove to the hospital that you do not have the money, then they will offer a payment plan. If it's benign, then you have some time to look at other options.

My mom's doctor is in Palm Springs, CA. You could probably call and get a phone appointment to consult. Dr. Platt Medical Center.
