what causes polycyctic ovarian syndrome?

my daughter is 7 yrs old and we have been trying to have another child since she was about 2 and i just found out recently that i have polycyctic ovarian syndrome,i just had a polypectomy and a hysteroscopy done to remove the fibroids from my uterus they now have me on metformin and birth control to regulate my menses.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS, also known clinically as Stein-Leventhal syndrome), is an endocrine disorder that affects 5–10% of women. It occurs amongst all races and nationalities, is the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age, and is a leading cause of infertility. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary greatly between women. While the causes are unknown, insulin resistance (often secondary to obesity) is heavily correlated with PCOS.
PCOS is caused by when none of the ova in your ovum (eggs in your ovary) become dominate and therefore none are released.
Since none are released you don’t have your period and your uterine lining builds up heightening your chance of uterine cancer.
PCOS can also cause diabetes and infertility.
Birth control regulates your period to get rid of the uterine lining and lowers the chance for uterine cancer.
Diet and exercise can work really well and if you lose about 10% of your weight, you might not need to use fertility drugs later on.
Actually the ova building up are an effect, not a cause, of PCOS. PCOS is at root a hormone imbalance.
