what is the cause of fibroid, is there anyway it can be treated without surgery.?

can fibroid be treated by injections and drugs without surgery. when it is 5.5 in size is it too big ? or just average?

No one is sure of the exact cause but too much estrogen is a common symptom of women w/ fibroids.
A non-surgical method of treatment is uterine artery embalization.
Fibroids have been as large as 50 lbs. and covering the entire abdomen, so 5.5 in doesn’t sound overly large.

Although there still is no definitive cause, research and clinical experience point to:
(1) genetic alterations
(2) hormones (estrogen and progesterone)
(3) other chemicals (like growth factors)
Non-surgical treatment options include:
(1) Uterine Fibroid Embolization
(2) MR-guided Focused Ultrasound
(3) Drug therapy, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), birth-control pills and hormone therapy (Lupron)
Keep in mind that any fibroid shrinkage with Lupron is temporary. Once the injections stop, the fibroids regrow. As far as size, I am not sure. My symptoms (severe cramping, heavy bleeding, clots, anemia) are what finally caused me to seek help.
I would also suggest seeing an OB/GYN and seeking a second opinion if necessary.

Just want to add that if you are already in your forties and don’t want surgery,you might as well wait for menopause and let nature shrink the fibroids for you.
lf,on the other hand,you are still far from menopause and want to have children,surgery is the best option for a 5.5” fibroid.

I have recently had a Uterine Fibroid Embolization. I literally was forever on my period took two iron tablets a day, took a change of clothes everywhere and basically had no quality of life. Although fibroids are very common 2 out of 3 women have them, my doctors were reluctant to diagnose them until I sought a fourth (yes fourth) opinion.
Unless your symtoms are as bad as above, your doctor may advise surgery (Possibly keyhole) to remove them. If you haven’t had an ultra-sound scan yet then I suggest you have one soon.
If your fibroids are tiny and few then please don’t worry too much as most women have them. It is when they are HUGE that they start to be a problem.
